Abstract
The vision of the World Health Organization (WHO) is « health for all ». To accomplish this, WHO has recognized the important roles of traditional medicines. Of all traditional medicines, Chinese medicine is the best documented, with written records dated from antiquity to the present days. It has evolved paradigms which differ distinctly from the western medicine, and concepts that are difficult to reconcile with modern science. Chinese medicine blends the human health state with nature metaphors, using concepts such as « Qi » (the vital force or energy form) and « Yin-Yang » (femaleness and maleness or polarity) to describe the causes of diseases, and employing theories based on five elements (agonists and antagonists), pulse and exterior exhibitions for their diagnosis and treatments. Above all, Chinese medicine strongly advocates nutrition, harmony with nature, prevention, health preservation, and treatment of sub-health conditions, with herbal tonics, diet, exercise, acupuncture, and message.
In this series of three lectures, I will highlight the foundation, theory and practice of Chinese medicine from my perspective as a medicinal chemist. I will discuss the parallelisms of Chinese and modern medicines, the influence of herbal medicine on drug discovery and modern medicine, and efforts of integrating both medicines including our research program on herbalomics.
