Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is a powerful technique for the separation of small and large molecules. The major drawback in CE is low concentration sensitivity. This is primarily due to the small injection size (e.g. 10 nL) and small dimension of the CE column (e.g. 50 µm ID). Over the last two decades, several on-line sample preconcentration techniques (e.g., sample stacking, transient isotachophoresis, sweeping, and dynamic pH junction) to improve detection sensitivity in CE have been developed. Here, analyte focusing by micelle collapse and micelle to solvent stacking are presented as new dimensions for the on-line sample preconcentration of analytes in CE with UV and mass spectrometric detection.

Dr. Joselito P. Quirino is a Research Fellow and Senior Lecturer at the Australian Centre for Research on Separation Science (ACROSS), Department of Chemistry, University of Tasmania, Australia. He graduated BS Industrial Pharmacy, 1992 from the University of the Philippines Manila, MSc, Material Science (Analytical Chemistry), 1998 and PhD, Material Science (Analytical Chemistry), 1999 from the Himeji Institute of Technology (now Hyogo University), Hyogo, Japan. He did his postdoc with Prof. Shigeru Terabe at the same institute and another one with Prof. Richard Zare at Stanford University, California, USA. He has 6 years experience working in the U.S. pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry as an analytical development scientist.
