Traditionally, linear fluorocarbons have been used as the major tool to control solubility and/or partitioning of catalysts in fluorous systems. As these systems continue to mature, alternate fluorinated attachments need to be available to increase versatility and application. There is little demonstration on the usefulness of new fluourinated attachments in modifying sterics, partitioning, and the overall influence of a catalytic system in fluorous biphasic applications. Our research has made an attempt to look at practical synthetic methods to use fluorinated ethers in model systems. Syntheses, partition coefficients, catalytic ability, and the reusing of precious catalytic metals will be explored.
