In the last two decades, lanthanide complexes have been extensively used for their catalytic, magnetic and luminescence properties resulting in the development of numerous important application in particular in the field of bio-imaging as fluorescent-probe for fluoro-immunoassays as well as contrast agents for medical magnetic resonance imaging. By contrast, the study of the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of lanthanides remains in its infancy and becomes currently an emerging field of research. Here, we will illustrate the potentialities of lanthanides for NLO and underline the direct contribution of f-electrons the quadratic hyperpolarisability[1] as well as the first example of nonlinear fluorescence microscopy imaging using europium, terbium or ytterbium derivatives[2] towards the design of new bio-probes as grafted or doped silica nanoparticles.

During the course of this study, we serendipity discovered a new class of compounds exhibiting very strong supramolecular interactions with amino-acid, able to co-crystallise with a large variety of proteins and acting as valuable auxiliaries for proteins X-rays structures determination.[3]
