Alberto Marra graduated summa cum laude in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Pisa (Italy) in 1985. Then he moved to France and obtained his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI) in 1989 working in the laboratories of the Ecole Normale Supérieure under the supervision of Prof. P. Sinaÿ. He spent one more year in Paris as Researcher of the French National Research Council (CNRS). He was postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Zurich (Switzerland) with Prof. A. Vasella (1991) and then moved to the University of Ferrara (Italy) where he joined the group of Prof. A. Dondoni.
He was appointed to a lectureship in Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Engineering from 1992 to 1998 and was promoted to the position of Associate Professor in 1998 at the same University. Since 2002 he was teaching at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Ferrara (Organic Chemistry, Natural Products Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry). He was member of the Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Inflammation of the University of Ferrara. He spent one month (June 2008) at the Université de Picardie Jules Verne (Amiens, France) and one month (June 2010) at the Université de Cergy-Pontoise (France) as Visiting Professor. On September 2012 he got a permanent position as Professor at the Université Montpellier 2 (France). His research interest centres on carbohydrate chemistry. In particular he synthesized oligosaccharide fragments of blood group determinants, heparin, dermatan sulfate and developed new glycosyl donors and glycosylation promoters. Then he developed new synthetic methodologies for the preparation of C-oligosaccharides, C-glycosyl amino acids, and C-glycosyl phosphonates. Recent work is dealing with the synthesis and molecular recognition properties of glycosylated crown ethers, glycoside clusters, glycodendrimers, monomeric and polymeric calixarene derivatives.
