Biography
Sonia Cantel completed her PhD in Chemistry of Biomolecules at the University of Montpellier in 2004, under the guidance of Dr. Jean-Alain Fehrentz. Her research concentrated on new solid-phase organic synthesis methodologies for peptidomimetics. Then, she spent two years as a Post-doctoral Fellow in the Laboratory for Translational Research at Harvard Medical School under the mentorship of Professor Michael Chorev. During this period, she actively engaged in biomedicinal projects requiring collaboration across scientific disciplines, developing extensive expertise in analytical techniques for protein engineering and emphasizing chemistry's role alongside other scientific disciplines. Her notable achievements included pioneering new methodologies for synthesizing glycated antigenic peptides, [1,2,3]triazolyl-bridged peptides, and developing in situ templated-click assembly of fragments to generate potent inhibitors of protein-protein interactions. In 2007, she joined the group of Professor Jean Martinez at Institute of Biomolecules Max Mousseron (IBMM), leveraging her multidisciplinary experience to pioneer new projects at the interface of Chemistry, Biology, and Analytical Sciences. Her research focuses on development of chemical probes for specific and sensitive detection of peptides and proteins in biological media. Notably, she could conduct pharmacological studies, investigating GPCR/ligand interactions using MALDI Mass Spectrometry. Actively involved in the peptide and protein community, she is an active member of GFPP (French Group of Peptides and Proteins) and was president from 2019 to 2022.
