BUT2-3/2A Internship: Investigation of Protein/Nanoparticle Release from Hybrid Silylated Hydrogels: Impact of Overall Charge (ADAPT Project)

Project Description

Biopolymer-based hydrogels are promising matrices for the controlled delivery of therapeutic agents.

The ADAPT project aims to develop a new generation of hydrogels formed through sol-gel crosslinking of silylated polysaccharides. The objective is to modulate electrostatic interactions between the hydrogel matrix and the encapsulated proteins or nanoparticles without relying on covalent bonds. This approach aims to develop a versatile platform adaptable to different types of encapsulated cargo and release kinetics.

The aim of this internship is to design and formulate tunable hydrogels using the sol-gel process for the controlled delivery of proteins or nanoparticles.

Student Missions

During the internship, you will be involved in:

  • Hydrogel formulation: Preparing and optimizing bulk hydrogel matrices based on silylated biopolymers and silylated amino acids or peptides;
  • Encapsulation and release kinetics: Evaluating maximum encapsulation capacity and monitoring the release kinetics of model proteins over several days;
  • Analytical characterization: Performing biochemical assays (BCA), UV-Vis spectroscopy, and rheological characterization;
  • Physicochemical characterization: Investigating the structural and surface properties of the materials, including zeta potential measurements, stability, and degradation.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for a second- or third-year BUT student (French University Bachelor of Technology) or a second-year engineering student with a strong interest in biomaterials.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate:

  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • A rigorous and methodical approach to experimental work;
  • Proficiency in processing and analyzing experimental data, particularly using Excel.
