M2/3A Internship: Development of a Hybrid, Degradable Dermal Substitute Loaded with Bioactive Compounds from Réunion Island Biodiversity
Project Description
Founded in 2024 and based on Réunion Island, Skinegy initiated the Skincense research project, conducted in collaboration with the Polymers for Health and Biomaterials (PHBM) team at the Institut des Biomolécules Max Mousseron (IBMM).
The project focuses on the development of a new therapeutic approach for the treatment of chronic wounds, including pressure ulcers, ulcers, and diabetic foot wounds. These lesions represent a major public health issue and are characterized by prolonged inflammation, a persistent risk of infection, and impaired tissue healing processes.
The aim of the research project is to develop a dermal substitute designed to be placed directly into the wound and compatible with the delivery of natural bioactive compounds derived from Réunion Island flora to promote wound healing.
Research conducted within the PHBM team focuses on the development and characterization of the polymer matrix of the dermal substitute, consisting of a degradable and porous hydrogel scaffold. More specifically, the project investigates a granular scaffold composed of assembled gel microbeads. These matrices are formulated from functionalized natural and synthetic polymers whose properties enable crosslinking under UV irradiation and the formation of a stable polymer network suitable for the intended applications.
Student Missions
During the internship, you will investigate the in vitro biological properties of the scaffold, including:
- evaluation of cell colonization through proliferation assays;
- characterization of its wound-healing potential through the analysis of extracellular matrix deposition and associated functional markers;
- characterization of the biological properties of the bioactive compounds under investigation, particularly their anti-inflammatory and wound-healing activities.
These studies will help characterize the biological profile of the device and generate the preliminary data required for its future in vivo evaluation.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for a Master’s (M2) student or equivalent, who is independent, curious, and highly motivated to contribute to a multidisciplinary project at the interface of cell biology and biomaterials in the field of health research.
A strong background in cell biology, particularly in cell culture and in vitro characterization, is the main requirement.
Knowledge of biomaterials would be a significant asset.
