Physicochemical properties and biomedical applications of dialkylsulfoxides

The main results obtained by our research group, together with foreign collaborators, during the past ten years and current results as well, are presented including physicochemical properties and biomedical applications of dialkylsulfoxides (DASO). Among dialikylsulfoxides the most known is dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). The significance of DMSO is well recognized in different areas of natural sciences, including chemical, biological, medical and geophysical aspects.

The topic of this talk deals with peculiarities and applications of not only DMSO but other nearest homologous such as diethylsulfoxide (DESO), dipropylsulfoxide (DPSO), and dibutylsulfoxide (DBSO). Our systematic studies on solutions of homologous of DMSO, especially and mostly DESO, reveal new physicochemical features, which earlier have not been reported. Biomedical applications of DASO include : (i) growth stimulation of economically important plants ; (ii) development of microbiological cryoprotectors ; (iii) studies of growth, survival, and ion exchange effects on Escherichia coli ; (iv) DNA denaturation ; (v) effect on the vitamins’ solutions.
