With a DUT in Chemistry (1995) from the IUT in Montpellier, Jérôme Montels initially worked in a variety of professional fields (construction worker, wine technician, cable assembler, etc.). He then moved into higher education with an initial 8-month stint (2002-2003) as a replacement for a chemistry technical assistant in an inorganic chemistry laboratory at Blaise Pascal University in Clermont-Ferrand, followed by a position as principal technical assistant (2005) in a Control laboratory at ENSIACET, INP in Toulouse.

In 2008, he joined the University of Montpellier as an analytical chemistry technician and was assigned to the Pharmaceutical & Biological Sciences UFR in the oenology department for teaching and the F12 Biomolecule Analytical Sciences research team at IBMM. He is involved in the various projects developed within the projects team (scientific and technical contribution). He is responsible for the maintenance, qualification and repair of the laboratory's equipment, in particular the capillary electrophoresis systems.

Jérôme Montels is also responsible for the team's safety, training and logistics within the Institute.
