Electroactive materials across multiple length scales : from monolayers to 3D-printed architectures

The challenge of construction of functional hierarchical architectures over multiple length scales is a current theme at the frontier of research into colloids and soft matter. We have extensively exploited the use of electrostatic interactions in our ionic self-assembly (ISA) route over the last decade in pursuit of this goal.[1] In order to achieve a combination of functionality and hierarchical order, we have recently turned our attention to and are investigating :
1. the combination of block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly with ISA (using the combination of block co-polyelectrolytes and oppositely charged surfactants),[2] and metal-containing BCPs ;[3]
2. design and synthesis[4] of oligo(aniline)s as well-defined functional moieties for novel surfactants, electroactive nanostructured materials,[5] fibres, and porous materials.[6]

The possibilities to exert control over structure formation using non-covalent interactions, tuning volume fractions and mutual compatibility provides exciting opportunities to develop design principles for construction – from sub-monolayer thin films to 3D-printed architectures.
