Natural products are small and diverse chemical entities used by living organisms to communicate or compete. They are originated from genetically encoded pathways responding to biotic or abiotic environmental stimuli and possess extremely diverse biological properties, which may be used for medicinal, agrochemical and other purposes. It is the purpose of our work to study the molecular origin, the biological role and the chemical behaviour of such compounds at the National Museum of Natural History, which will ultimately lead us to biomimetic synthetic adventures aiming at understanding how complex natural products can be elaborated. The total synthesis of hybrid polyketides in the chalasan series, fungal PKS-NRPS compounds, will be presented.
