Mechanochemistry has revolutionized how scientists and industrialists do chemistry, and has been dubbed by IUPAC as one of the ’10 chemical innovations that will change the world’. In contrast to traditional routes, mechanochemical syntheses induce reactivity through mechanical force, and require little to no solvent.
Significant progress has been made in mechanochemical research to demonstrate the breadth of chemistry that can be performed through these methods. However, fundamental understanding of the underlying mechanisms is yet limited. The development of new mechanochemical routes is therefore restricted to trial and error. This is particularly problematic for industrial applications, where a lack in a priori knowledge of mechanically-induced transformations can lead to grave errors in the resulting material.

In this presentation I shall give a personal view of the present state of research in the field of mechanochemistry of organic compounds, on the existing challenges and possible future directions of research.
